Graphing
Calculator Requirement
For all
regular education students, a graphing calculator (TI 84plus
or TI-Nspire).
Costco carries the 84+
for $99.99 in the fall and you can find the
TI-Nspire or the 84+
online at the Bach Company for a great price. The 83+ is a suitable
calculator, but it is like buying a 9 year old computer. It just doesn't have
the memory that the newer calculators have. Please do not buy the TI-89,
it will not work with our Navigator wireless system. The TI-Nspire does
all that the 89 does and more. It is definitely the calculator of choice. I
would also avoid the CAS version of the TI-Nspire, it doesn't work on our
system. For the student that cannot afford to purchase there own
calculator, we have a few loaner calculators. The student is then responsible
for the calculator until the end of the year and responsible for replacement if
it is lost or damaged. Mariposa County High School also uses these
calculators. Students will also need them as they progress on through High
School, to take and be competitive, on the SAT test for college acceptance.

Math 7
In grade 7, students increase their ability to manipulate numbers and
learn to use scientific notation. Students learn to apply basic formulas and solve
problems involving rate, speed, and distance. Students learn to use Pythagorean
Theorem and how to graph and find the slope of lines. Students increase their
ability to understand mathematical concepts and their capacity for abstract thinking.
Students must demonstrate a command of basic computational skills as
evidenced by passing the Fundamental Skills Check. This is a great site
that has Fundamental Skill
examples and practice problems.
Students that achieved a perfect score on the fundamental
skills check are often taken to lunch by their math teacher for their
outstanding work.

Math 8
Math 8 is for students who are not quite ready for Algebra
1 in one year. This class is the first semester of the algebra 1
course spread out over an entire year. Students will also focus on meeting the
8th grade promotion standards and passing the required fundamental skills exam.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will move into the second
semester of algebra 1 at the high school. This is a great site that has Fundamental
Skill examples and practice problems.
Our Math 8 Teacher is:
Mr. Collins
and Mrs. Wellcome
Algebra 1
By the eighth grade, students mathematical sensitivity is sharpened.
Students use symbolic manipulation and solve equations and inequalities.
Students learn to use symbolic language and mathematics and science as well as use graphs
as tools to solve problems. Students delve deeply into mathematics, gain conceptual
understanding of mathematics, and experience pure reasoning using inductive and deductive
logic.
Students must develop an understanding of mathematical concepts. They
must also learn to gather and analyze data, generalize, and draw conclusions to meet all
standards. Some of the standards the students must meet are: understanding and using the
rules of exponents, able to simplify expressions, identify and use the properties of
numbers, and solve multi-step word problems and provide justification for each step.
Our Algebra teacher is:

Collins
Geometry
Some students who are Algebra 1 ready in
7th grade are able to enroll in Geometry in 8th grade. Students will
develop deeper understanding of inductive and deductive reasoning and will have
exposure with elementary proof writing techniques that are seen in higher order
mathematics. Students will work with properties of Euclidean Geometry that
accesses knowledge toward higher level Algebraic thinking.
